Andorra and Spain agree on opening a second lane to ease border congestion

Andorra and Spain have agreed on a new coordination protocol to speed up the opening of a second traffic lane at the border, with the aim of reducing congestion during periods of heavy traffic.

The Secretary of State for Energy Transition, Transport and Mobility, David Forné, announced the agreement on X, highlighting the joint work between the Andorran Police, Mobility authorities and the Spanish National Police.

“Good joint work by the Police and Mobility authorities to improve traffic flow at the border,” Forné said.

Faster opening of the second lane

The new protocol is designed to allow the authorities to respond more quickly when traffic volumes increase and the opening of an additional lane becomes necessary.

The measure aims to prevent long queues from building up at the border and to reduce waiting times during periods of particularly heavy traffic.

According to Forné, the new coordination mechanism will make it easier for the different authorities to act jointly and open the second lane more efficiently when traffic conditions require it.

Coordination during peak traffic periods

The agreement is particularly relevant during weekends, public holidays and holiday periods, when traffic between Andorra and Spain can increase significantly.

The Andorran authorities and the Spanish National Police will therefore have a more clearly defined coordination mechanism to manage traffic flows and respond to congestion.
