From expectation to disappointment: clouds cover the eclipse in Andorra

Expectations were high for one of the most anticipated astronomical events of the year, with the Sun obscured by up to 99% in some areas. However, weather conditions ultimately spoiled the spectacle in Andorra.

Hundreds gather to watch the eclipse

Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday at some of the country's key observation points, including the Tristaina viewpoint and Port de Cabús, hoping to watch the solar eclipse. However, clouds covered much of the sky and made it considerably more difficult to see the phenomenon.

Weather forecasts had already warned of possible cloud cover and even rain, although conditions were expected to improve towards the evening. In the end, the clouds remained during much of the eclipse, reducing the visual impact of an event that had generated considerable anticipation.

Pyrenees weather complicates observation

Starlight guide Jordi Colell explained that weather conditions in the Pyrenees can change unexpectedly at the last minute, making it even more difficult to observe the eclipse.

The final phase of the phenomenon also coincided almost exactly with sunset, further reducing the window available to observe it clearly.

Despite the difficulties, the eclipse prompted a significant turnout of residents and visitors, who headed to the best observation points in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the event.

Perseid meteor shower offers another opportunity

The weather, however, ultimately became the main protagonist, leaving one of the year's most anticipated astronomical spectacles in Andorra only partially visible. 

The weather conditions should not necessarily prevent people from observing other astronomical phenomena expected during the night, including the Perseid meteor shower, provided that cloud cover allows for adequate visibility.
