Two climbers were rescued overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday after becoming trapped on the Raiers route on Peguera Peak, in the municipality of Espot, due to a severe storm.

According to the Catalan Fire Service, the storm caught the two mountaineers on the final section of the route, preventing them from continuing their ascent. The climbers had to wait for the weather conditions to improve before the rescue operation could be carried out.

Once the storm had passed, a helicopter from the Andorran Fire Service intervened in the operation and rescued the two climbers, transporting them to La Seu d’Urgell. From there, both were taken to hospital for the appropriate medical examination.

The ground operation also involved members of the Special Operations Support Group (GRAE) of the Catalan Fire Service, who assisted with the rescue efforts.

Staff from the Estany Gento funicular also collaborated with the emergency services, making the facility available to facilitate access to the rescue area.

The joint operation successfully brought the two climbers to safety following a night marked by severe weather conditions in the Pyrenees.
